Organizing Your Entryway

The pools are closing, the windows are opening, and gourds are appearing on doorsteps... but, wait- oh, no!  Your entryway is still full of pool bags, sunhats, and bug spray!  And your sweaters are still in storage under the bed!  Truly a Halloween horror situation in our book.

Let us help you side step this October nightmare with our best tips for transitioning smoothly from summer to fall.  Enjoy!

Tip #1: Remove summer gear

Ahhh the ritualistic transitioning of the entryway... Nothing feels more like fall.  Oh, just us???  First step- remove all the summer gear that you won't need until the weather warms up again.  Wash the swimsuits and towels and store them out of the way.  Pack up the pool toys and goggles, and edit as you go.  If something won't fit your child next year, has holes, doesn't work, or is no longer loved, go ahead and put it in your trash or donate pile now.  Summer 2024 will thank you later.

Tip #2: Give your space a quick clean

Now is the time to vacuum out the drawers and give them a quick wipe.  Clean any nooks and crannies that are typically covered up for a fresh start to the season. We love a handheld vacuum for small spaces like this. For bonus points, place some scented sachets or dryer sheets in your drawers to keep the freshness going until spring.

Tip #3: Stock & organize for fall

Now that your space is empty and clean- the fun part!  Pull out the knit hats, mittens, hoodies, and vests, wash if needed, and stock your space for fall!  This is the perfect time to make sure winter gear is the right size and in good condition.

Now, lets set up some simple systems. Think about how you really need your entry space to function and what you need to house there. That is going to look different for everyone, but the main idea is that you want a designated landing spot for everything you want to house in your entryway.

Some storage ideas you can consider:

  • Small decorative bowl for keys, sunglasses, and spare change.

  • Matching slim velvet hangers for coats hanging in a coat closet

  • Sturdy hooks for jackets and backpacks...make sure kids hooks are low enough for them to reach indepenently

  • One decorative basket for shoes per person, clearly labeled and super accessible vs high on shelf or behind closed doors. Boot trays can work well during the winter.

  • Hanging wall pockets for paper and magazines. One large box for kids artwork to be sorted through when it gets full.

  • Outbox of items that need to be returned or otherwise leave your home.

  • Decorative items such as a runner, mirror, console table, bench, plants.

We don't know about you, but we want to be ready to run out the door with the kiddos when that first snow hits the ground!  Now didn't that feel like a fabulous fall ritual?! If you're ready to tackle a project but aren’t sure where to start, we've got your back! Give us a call- we'd love to chat!
